Are You Ready?
The time to prepare your facility for response to an
attempted threat or terrorist attack is before the incident, not after. Many
petro-chemical plants in the greater Houston-Galveston region are pro-actively
ramping up their awareness, planning and preparations with respect to terrorist
threats. Brian Caldwell will provide an overview of infrastructure preparedness
options and offer an insightful look at the threat of terrorism in our industry
today.
Speaker: Brian E. Caldwell, CIPS
Mr. Caldwell has worked in the petro-chemical
industry for 20 years in a variety of roles including radiation safety,
hazardous chemicals and waste handling and disposal, environmental compliance
and remediation. Brian has an B.S. degree in plant and soil science from the
University of Delaware, and an M.S. in environmental management from
University of Houston Clear Lake. Brian is a certified infrastructure
preparedness specialist and currently utilizes this training as facility
security officer for Solutia Inc. in Alvin, Texas. In addition, Brian is an
Environmental, Safety & Health Specialist with Solutia Inc. in support of
water compliance programs, spill response and integrated contingency plans,
and provides regulatory consulting for the USCG, pipeline and drinking water
programs at the plant.

March 23rd Topic: Stewart and Stevenson Tactical Vehicle Division manufacturing plant tour On March 23rd, 2005 the Buffalo Bayou Chapter of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers toured the Stewart and Stevenson Tactical Vehicle Division manufacturing plant is Sealy, TX. Stewart and Stevenson TVS manufacture a family of medium tactical vehicles for the US Army. The vehicles include some 15 variants of 2.5 and 5 ton tactical vehicles. The tour included a walk through of the entire manufacturing operation including the fabrication center, test track, electrodeposition tank line, main assembly line and the Armored Cab assembly areas.

January 25th Topic: The Port Of Houston Authority: Who We Are and What We Do. The Truth May Surprise You. The Port of Houston Authority has nine operational facilities along the Houston Ship Channel (and they are currently building their 10th). Along with having nine facilities come various environmental challenges. Come to the January CHMM meeting and find out answers to the following questions along with any others you may have regarding the Port Authority and their environmental programs.
Speaker: Scott Aspelin Scott Aspelin is currently a Compliance Coordinator in the Environmental Affairs Department at the Port of Houston Authority. He has been with the Port for one year and started out overseeing the water quality programs. During his tenure at the Port he also spent time as the Interim Manager of the Environmental Affairs group and has now been reassigned as the project manager for the Houston Ship Channel Expansion project (deepening, widening, and marsh creation). Prior to coming to the Port, Scott worked for HydroChem Industrial Services in their corporate HSE department handling environmental and safety matters. Before coming to HydroChem, Scott was an Associate Environmental Engineer at ISK Biosciences (now called GB Biosciences), which is located on Greens Bayou. He attended Baylor University graduating with a double major of Business Administration and Environmental Studies and then while working at ISK, he completed his Masters degree in Environmental Management at UH-Clear Lake. He has also been a CHMM since 2002.
