The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) has developed the Recertification Program to ensure that CHMMs maintain the highest professional standards and enhance their continued competence. The program requires that CHMMs participate in professional development activities and submit evidence of these activities on a periodic basis. CHMMs must earn seventeen (17) certification maintenance points (CMPs) over the course of a five-year cycle. Meeting these requirements is mandatory to maintain the CHMM certification.

Recertification Reminder ...

Tips for Preparing Your Recertification Submission1

  1. Two areas deserve your primary attention: Active Professional Practice and Professional Development Activities.  The average CHMM will achieve 16.25 of the required 17 CMP's from these two categories.
bulletRemember to provide documentation for Active Professional Practice (e.g. a letter from your employer, a copy of your official position description, or - if you are self-employed - a company letterhead with a description of your business, etc.).
bulletYou must show a total of 6.25 CMPs in Professional Development Activities over the course of the 5 year cycle, or provide an explanation of why you were unable to meet this requirement.
  1. When claiming credit for professional society chapter participation (such as ACHMM Chapters), you need to provide documentation of attendance at half or more of the scheduled meetings.  ACHMM Chapter Leaders please note: You are required to provide such documentation to your members.  Why? Belonging to such a group and paying dues is an admirable way to support the organization, but you do not derive any personal development benefit unless you attend meetings.
  2. Please 'sanitize' your submission - send in only the documents that pertain directly to the points you are claiming, and black out any Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or other sensitive data.
